For some time we planned a project with pipes (our first recordings were back in 2012), but many things prevented us from doing it before so far, namely the fact that we wanted to avoid the need for too many switches in favor of being able to simply control the airflow.
Thanks to our recent work on hybrid sample mixing and modeling technology, we’ve been able to overcome both of these challenges and take advantage of the best of both worlds: flawlessly authentic sounding horns with a simple and powerful way to play them.
Following the original approach of Dr. Giorgio Tommasini and Samplemodeling to harmonic alignment, we developed our own approach and called it HAT (Harmonic Alignment Technology). This technology accurately reproduces the evolution of the timbre from very quiet playing to very loud playing.
We found a way to combine both technologies, using samples as the sound source and the rest using modeling techniques. This allows the V Horns to weigh just around 90MB per instrument (including retina graphics and presets) to truly sound like a real live French horn, with all its flaws, as well as have a completely continuous response with incredible playability.
And we’re sure we can tell that to our ears, and hopefully to yours too, VHorns is the most realistic and easy-to-use VST available today. Here are some live performances from real musicians and what we recreated with VHorns (and used for our demos).
